Sub-Land-Huts
Sub-Land-Huts investigates the lineage of huts and there sustainable principles. Each of the huts explore a singular form based off of generations of cultural and environmental evolution, specifically, the earth huts of the Nordic-Baltic region.
Type: Poet Huts and Care Taker House
Location: Pavilosta, Latvia
Structure: Wood
Year: 2019
Criteria: Past and Present Hut Typologies
These huts provide the dwellers a unique experience and connection to the land they inhabit. The forms and setting out allow for each hut to be given a heightened sense of privacy. Each hut is separated and connected with bushed paths and are positioned along a perimeter ring.
Environmentally, sunken earth huts provide the ability to use natural, local, and site specific resources to accommodate the necessities of human dwelling in the winter climate of Latvia. Materials range from locally sourced plywood, framing from local mills, insulation from the excavation of the site (pact & layered soil). Sunken into the earth while using earth medium as an insulator allows the huts temperature to be better regulated year round while maintaining local plant biodiversity.
The caretakers home is the outlier on the site. As the largest space it becomes a beacon and haven for all communal activities., all events are hosted at the base of the home which is adaptable, simple, and open.
